On The Verge
'On The Verge' is a community greening and gardening project.
Coming up to nearly seven years ago, Kathy Fish, inspired by the beauty of the verges around Robertson and Bonnievale, decided to garden and beautify the verges in Noordhoek.
A team of four gardeners can be seen every Wednesday digging, weeding or planting somewhere along the roadsides. Nisan Bloch agreed to help with the many projects a year ago and his energy, and enthusiasm has been a real lifeline for the project. Local residents have been extremely supportive and enthusiastic, contributing with plants, cuttings, compost and watering at times. The local municipality have also supported us by giving us trees to add to existing avenues along the road sides and for children’s play parks.
We have to date planted about 100 trees, and gardened 28 verges. We have helped with alien clearing and extended and maintained various walking and riding paths. We have also revamped and maintain the historic Village Lane Post-Office garden and planted trees in two play parks.
We have the support of about fifteen local sponsors, from the business community, private individuals and community groups including NEAG (Noordhoek Environmental Action Group), the Noordhoek Riding Club, The Food Barn, Cafe Roux and The Red Herring restaurants. We have thus been able to pay up to four gardeners once a week.
On The Verge was asked to organise the first Open garden’s event in Noordhoek last year. A very happy, successful day, saw us raising enough money to pay for our very own trailer and water carrier to help our verge gardens through the very dry windy summers. We are really excited to be organising the second annual open Gardens event this year and will be running it over two days this time – 22 and 23 October. Please support this event – we have awesome gardens on show and the proceeds will once again help On the Verge to continue to beautify Noordhoek and help protect our magnificent valley.
We would love to grow the team, so that we can tackle even more projects. If you would like to support this project or find out more about On The Verge, contact Kathy Fish on : 021 7891440/ 082 3965295 email : email@example.com FaceBook: http://www.facebook.com/noordhoek.ontheverge
